Focus on the Core

Are you looking to get the beach body you want for summer? You won’t get a perfect midsection, bigger lifts, or better performance without a strong base. I’m thinking it’s time you put a bigger focus on your core.

When people think of their core they immediately think it’s all about the abs. That is actually only one piece of the puzzle.

Every muscle relies on your abs, hips, and lower back. THAT is your core. The lower back seems to be the one area that gets neglected the most so here are a couple of simple exercises to get you started.

Superman

Lay flat on your stomach with your arms out in front of you, palms to the floor. Lift your arms and legs from the floor. You will feel the contraction in your lower back muscles. Hold for 10 seconds then relax. Although it doesn’t really look like you are doing anything, this exercise is very deceiving and I guarantee you will feel the burn.

Superman Alternate

This one is very similar to the last exercise but with a tiny variation. Lay flat on your stomach just as before. Lift your right arm and your left leg at the same time. Hold for 10 seconds, relax, and switch. It works your lower back muscles a little differently but is just as effective. You always want to switch it up just to keep your muscles guessing.

So there you go! Throw these in to your workout at the gym or at home!

Grouse Grind is OPEN!

Grouse grind

The snow is gone and all of us in Vancouver that LOVE hiking know what that means. The GRIND is finally open! If you haven’t had a chance to do the Grouse Grind you are definitely missing out. The trail climbs 853 metres over 2.9 km. With an average grade of 17 degrees it’s affectionately known as ” mother nature’s stairmaster”.

This year, Grouse Mountain Resorts is asking outdoor enthusiasts to put their hike  toward a good cause by signing up for Grind For Kids, a fundraising initiative  for B.C. Children’s Hospital. The program encourages trail users to get friends  and coworkers to pledge a dollar for every time they complete the hike over the  summer and to submit the funds at the end of the season. You can purchase an electronic time-card at the base of the Grind to track your progress online.

Need some extra motivation?

Do the “Seek the Peak” on June 17th in support of Rethink Breast Cancer. For more information visit http://seekthepeak.grousemountain.com/

Both of these are great opportunities to get outdoors, get in shape, and support great causes in our beautiful province! Get outside and conquer the Grind!

Vi-Shape Nutritional Shape Mix – “Fast Food” Made Healthy

90 Day ChallengeThese days, everything is made quick and easy. You can answer emails, calls, or even run a business from your phone. What about lunch or dinner? Same thing. Meals are  already done for you and can be microwaved in a matter of minutes.

For me personally, before I started on the 90 Day Challenge, the last thing on my mind was nutrition. I was always in a rush throughout the day and the last thing I thought about was eating a well-balanced and healthy diet.

Then I got introduced to the Vi-Shape Nutritional Shape Mix.

You honestly can’t find a better product for the price. For breakfast, I would head to Tim Hortons or McDonald’s to get a breakfast sandwich. Not the best choice, but it was quick and simple solution to feed the hunger. When you look at the big picture, loading up on 820g of sodium and 400 calories of garbage isn’t the best idea when you want to get into shape. It literally takes me 5 minutes to make a vi-shake and I get the complete nutrition I need - FAST

Blake Mallen’s Operation Transformation

Check this out people! Founder of ViSalus, Blake Mallen, took on his own 90-Day Challenge. That Challenge?  Gain 20 pounds of lean muscle in 3 months.Insane, but it’s crazy what you can achieve when you set a goal.

If this doesn’t motivate you to take it to the next level I don’t know what will!

Looking for a Pre-Run snack?

What are the chances you’ve gone for a short run on an empty stomach? I’m gonna take a guess and say that you have. But don’t worry, you’re not alone! Most people decide to skip having a snack because they feel it might affect their performance. In reality, you’re actually hindering your workout more than you’re helping it.

The right snack can prevent premature fatigue and keep blood sugar levels steady. An Orange has only 62 calories. It also contains more than 100 percent of your daily Vitamin C needs. Not only is it the perfect snack to curb the hunger, but Vitamin C helps prevent muscle injuries and replaces collagen in muscle fibers that break down during exercise.

So next time you need a boost before you head out on that jog, go grab an orange!
